Lamar State College Port Arthur forward/center Matej Gaspert has signed with St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
Gaspert, a 6-foot-11 sophomore from Zagreb, Croatia, averaged 6.3 points and 4 rebounds per game for the Seahawks, who finished 15-17 and made the quarterfinal round of the Region XIV tournament in Jacksonville. At St. Mary’s, he’ll team up with Petar Radojicic and Freddie Williams, both of whom played at Lamar State in the previous three seasons. (Radojicic received a medical redshirt after the 2015-16 season and finished this past season second in scoring at St. Mary’s.)
“What I really like about St. Mary’s is the work ethic and the family feeling to it,” Gaspert said. “I already knew some people there and it was nice to feel accepted right away. The visit was awesome. The whole campus there is amazing and huge, and especially in the gym. The conditions look perfect, the team looks really good, and it just feels right.”
Lamar State coach Lance Madison was excited about Gaspert moving on to a four-year school.
Gaspert was one of five sophomores on this season’s Lamar State roster. The Seahawks on Tuesday announced two additional signings in Houston Baptist University transfer Colin Just and Lafayette Comeaux High School’s Devaughn Thomas, who will join Beaumont Central’s Byron Arceneaux, Carencro, Louisiana’s Braylon Chaisson and Fort Bend Bush’s Terrance Minor in the incoming class.
