Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens and two former sheriff candidates — Ray Beck and Joe Stevenson, have been indicted in Chambers County.
A person in Chambers County 344th District Court confirmed the three were indicted.
Stephens was charged with a tampering with a government record, which is a felony. Bond was set at $5,000. She turned herself in and has bonded out of jail, according to information from the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office.
Ray Beck, a former Beaumont police officer, and Jefferson County Deputy Joe Stevenson, were each indicted on a misdemeanor charge of accepting cash contributions more than $100. Bond was set at $2,500 and both men have turned themselves in and bonded out.
Stephens ran against Stevenson and Rod Carroll for the sheriff’s seat in 2016 on the democratic ticket. Carroll was not indicted on any wrongdoing.
Stephens then went head to head against the republican Beck and made history as the first black female sheriff in Texas.
