Kalon Barnes of Silsbee can be crowned the fastest high school guy of all-time.
The senior ran the 100 meters in 10.04 seconds to break a 28-year-old in winning the 4A state title Saturday at the UIL State Track & Field Championships in Austin.
That was part of a double for the two-time basketball state champion, who also won the 200 meters in 20.55. No meet record was set there.
Barnes’ 100 time beat the old record of 10.15 set by Henry Neal of Greenville. Ryan Martin of Stafford finished second Saturday at 10.41, and Jadon Maddux of Bridgeport was third at 10.52.
Barnes, who will play football next season at Baylor, had set the 4A state meet record of 10.22 last year.
Also Saturday, Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Eli Peveto came in fourth in the 1,600 meters, a day after finishing fourth in the 3,200, and Christian Weatherly was sixth in the triple jump.
