Port Neches-Groves sophomore Timothy Feemster was well back in the pack Monday after the opening round of the boys 5A state golf tournament at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.

It was pretty much the same story for PNG ex Braden Bailey in the NCAA regional at Tradition Golf Club in Bryan.

Feemster, the District 22-5A champion, struggled with green speed, three-putted six times and shot an 11-over-par 83. Though he rolled in three birdies, Feemster more than offset them with four double bogeys.

He is 11 strokes behind first-day leader Jake Holbrook of Granbury. Holbrook opened with a 67 and owns a one-stroke lead over Trip Carter of Highland Park. Feemster is tied for 58th place.

Bailey, meanwhile, was tied for 24th individually with a one-over-par 73 after the  first round of the 54-hole NCAA regional. The good news was that his Baylor team, which needs to finish in the top five to advance to next week’s NCAA tourney, was in second place with a 6-under team total.

The 11th ranked Bears, after shooting 282, trail No. 2 ranked Texas A&M by three strokes with 36 holes to play. Clemson is one shot back of Baylor at 283 and UCLA is in fourth place at 288.

On the individual side, Bailey is five strokes behind a trio of players who opened with 68s. Among that group is Texas A&M’s Chandler Phillips and Baylor’s Cooper Dossey.

Another area golfer, Jack Burke of Little Cypress-Mauriceville, shot a first-round 75 in the 4A state tournament being played on the Apple Rock course at Horseshoe Bay. Burke is seven strokes off the lead.
