Tuesday was a significantly better day for Port Neches-Groves sophomore Timothy Feemster in the 5A state tournament at Georgetown, and a marginally better one for Baylor junior Braden Bailey in the NCAA regional at College Station.

Feemster, after six three-putt greens doomed him to an 83 on Monday, rebounded with a 75 that did not include a single three-putt. After an outgoing two-under-par 34, it looked like he might make a really dramatic move. An incoming 41, however, forced him to settle for a good day instead of a special one.

“I am really proud of Timothy for the way he bounced back,” said PNG coach Ricky Keyes. “I told him before Tuesday’s round to savor the experience of playing in this. We think he’ll be back but you can’t assume that will happen.”

Feemster jumped from a tie for 58th to a tie for 36th in a competition at White Wing Golf Club dominated by Dallas Highland Park. With a 36-hole total of 564, HP won the team title by 33 shots over Cedar Park and Frisco Centennial.

Trip Carter of Highland Park won medalist honors at 134 on rounds of 68-66. He finished seven shots clear of teammate Turner Hosch.

In the 4A state tournament at Horseshoe Bay’s Apple Rock course, Little Cypress-Mauriceville freshman Jack Burke carded an 81 on day two to finish at 158. That was good for a tie for 11th place.

Bailey, meanwhile, improved from 73 to 72 in round two of the NCAA regional at Traditions Golf Club. The 36-hole total of 145 left him tied for 19th in individual competition, nine shots behind co-leaders Chandler Phillips and Brandon Smith of Texas A&M.

Baylor is in third place in team standings at minus 6. No. 2 ranked A&M is at minus-18, one shot ahead of Clemson. UCLA at even par and Ole Miss at plus 3 round out the top five heading into today’s final 18 holes.

CHIP SHOTS

Making aces seems to be as easy as pulling teeth for Jim Arisco. The Port Neches dentist scored his fourth hole in hole recently on the 151-yard, second hole at Beaumont Country Club.

Arisco used a 7-iron for an ace that was witnessed by Mark Eddingston, Buddy Reynolds, Ken Parker and Carl Huckaby …

Both Chris Stroud and Andrew Landry are skipping this week’s Byron Nelson Classic after struggling a bit in the final 36 holes of the Players Championship.

Stroud shot 72-71 on the weekend to finish tied for 46th and win $27,980. Landry pocketed $22,440 for a tie for 67th after closing with rounds of 71-74 …

Here’s a reminder that the eighth annual Babe Didrikson Zaharias Junior Golf Awards are set for Thursday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Montagne Center. Guest speaker is 14-time PGA Tour winner Hal Sutton who got considerable air time during the Players Championship with highlights of his 2000 win over Tiger Woods.

Boys and Girls Player of the Year and Character/Leadership winners will be announced at the event …

Registration deadline for a junior camp hosted at Babe Zaharias by Port Neches-Groves golf coach Rickey Keyes is May 19. Campers will get six hours of instruction from for $125 at the camp which runs from June 12-15.

Teaching will be done by ages groups with kids in kindergarten through fourth grades receiving instruction from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Students in grades 5 though 9 will be taught from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
