The first arraignment for Jonathan Torres, the man arrested for placing two bombs around Beaumont, has been canceled while the court rules on a motion by his attorney to get obtain a court-ordered psychological evaluation.

Torres was scheduled to be in court Thursday prior to the motion. Torres’ attorney Ryan Gertz filed the motion last week for the court to see if his client is competent to withstand trial.

Torres was arrested on May 24 in his home on the 4400 block of El Paso Street in Beaumont without incident.

After waving his right to a preliminary trial on May 29, Torres was indicted by a grand jury and charged with charged with use of an explosive to cause property damage, possession of an unregistered destructive device and mailing a threatening communication on May 10.

If convicted, Torres would face between a minimum of five and a maximum of 20 years in federal prison.

A new arraignment date has not been set as of Wednesday.
