VOLLEYBALL: Nederland takes down Barbers Hill in 5

After five sets with Barbers Hill, Nederland is 2-0 in District 21-5A.

Meg Sheppard and Karley McGill each made 14 kills, and both were heavily active on defense along with Destyn Miguez on Tuesday as the Bulldogs ground out a five-set home victory over Barbers Hill, 25-23, 21-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-11.

Miguez finished with 26 digs, and Sheppard earned a double-double with 12 digs. McGill nearly had a double-double with nine digs and added two blocks.

Hannah Hickey finished off 12 kills for Nederland (16-13, 2-0 in 21-5A). Jenna Jarrett (37 assists), Miguez and Sheppard each had two aces.

Nederland will host Vidor on Friday and visit Port Neches-Groves next Tuesday. Barbers Hill on Friday will visit Memorial, which had a bye Tuesday.

 

PNG 3, Cleveland 0

PNG waited a while to begin district play.

The Rock-A-Noos (23-4, 1-0 in 21-5A) played for just the second time in 10 days and held Cleveland to single digits in two sets, thanks in no small part to 12 aces. Harlee Barnwell served six of them, made 15 assists and had four digs in the 25-4, 25-14, 25-9 rout of Cleveland’s Indians.

Barnwell led PNG in service points with 18. Kasidee Sartin (14) and Halley Smith (nine) each had three aces.

Kaitlyn Gil hammered 14 kills, Liz Bolyard scored seven, Layla Stansbury had five and Maylin Louvier totaled four for PNG. Holly Jones totaled 11 assists.

Gil’s seven digs and three blocks also led PNG, which hosts Dayton on Friday.
