NEDERLAND — Around 10 a.m. students heard the call.
A 911 emergency call sounded over the announcements. The call detailed a wreck.
Students went outside to the street that runs in front of the school to see a frantic student running around checking on her friends in front of two demolished cars. Moments later, law enforcement arrived on the scene followed by an ambulance and fire truck.
It was only a story, role playing by students who acted out the “Shattered Dreams” presentation held at Nederland High to demonstrate to students the devastating effects of drunk driving.
The skit lasted about 10 minutes and included the appearance of a heartbroken mother who arrives at the scene, a drunk driver who takes and fails a field sobriety test and get arrested, and a student pronounced dead and put in a body bag at the scene.
Students received the effects of being a first responder on a scene as the Nederland Fire Department simulated the use of the “Jaws of Life” extrication equipment on the backside of the scene. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Acadian Ambulance also aided in the demonstration.
According to news release, every 15 minutes someone in Texas is injured or killed as a result of drunk driving.
“This reminds us that too many young lives have been lost and countless others severely impaired because of the tragic consequences of underage drinking and driving,” the release read. “We must all join together to teach young people that consuming alcohol while underage is never a good choice.”
NHS students will have an assembly Thursday to discuss and learn the importance of being sober behind the wheel.
