Yauromae Kennerson has lots of “grandchildren,” and while they may not be biological, they are still near and dear to her heart.

The children are first graders in Mrs. Alvarez’ classroom at Booker T. Washington Elementary School.

Kennerson, 87, is in her sixth year with the Foster Grandparent program and even earned the title Foster Grandparent of the Year in the 2014-2015 school year.

She explained why she got involved and why she continues to be part of the program.

“I needed to get out of the house and be with people, and by being with them, it helped me,” Kennerson said. “God has blessed me. There are wonderful people here. My teacher is wonderful. My principal is wonderful.”

Kennerson volunteers her time from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. three days a week at the school and helps the children with reading, adding that they love grandmother and she loves them.

The South East Texas Foster Grandparent Program is part of the South East Texas Regional Planning Commission and brings volunteers ages 55 and up together with students one-on-one. According to SETRPC’s website, the fostering of these relationships has assisted in answering the goals set forth by numerous agencies to break the cycle of drug abuse, crime and other programs experienced by a growing sector of today’s youth. At the same time the foster grandparents participate as vital members of society by sharing wisdom, convictions and experience.

Erica Seastruck, principal at Washington Elementary, said there are currently four foster grandparents working with students there. The school works to provide for all needs of the students — academics, of course, as well as social and emotional, such as giving a child a hug.

Tyronia McKenzie with the Foster Grandparent program said criteria for persons looking to be part of the program include having a love for children, the necessary health for the task and pass a criminal background check. A person must be at least 55 to be considered for the program and the oldest current volunteer is 90.
