Longtime NBA center Kendrick Perkins and former Port Arthur high school basketball All-American Earl Evans will be inducted into the Museum of the Gulf Coast during a ceremony from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.
Perkins, currently a free agent, was drafted in the first round (27th overall) by the Memphis Grizzlies (then traded to the Boston Celtics) in 2003 straight out of Ozen High School, where he had an All-American career of his own. He spent eight seasons with the Celtics and competed in two NBA Finals (2008, 2010), winning in his first trip there.
Perkins also spent four seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he went back to the Finals in 2012, was dealt to the eventual NBA runner-up Cleveland Cavaliers in February 2015, and also spent a season with the New Orleans Pelicans and most recently with the Cavaliers organization, including time in the NBA G League with Cleveland’s farm team in Canton, Ohio. Perkins has not signed with a team since Cleveland waived him in July.
Evans was a Parade High School All-American out of Lincoln High when he graduated in 1974. He averaged 28.6 points and 19.5 rebounds per game as a senior, according to The Oklahoman (Evans was a resident of Edmond at the time of his death in 2012). Longtime Lincoln coach James Gamble has said Evans was the best player he ever coached.
Evans originally signed with Southern California but later transferred to UNLV. He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 1978, and in 36 games during the 1979-80 season (the only professional season on record for him), he averaged 4.4 points and 2.1 rebounds.
