Freshman Devaughn Thomas hit for 30 points to lead Lamar State College Port Arthur to a 119-57 win over Victoria College in the first day of the Seahawks New Year Classic on Sunday.
Thomas, a 6-foot-7 guard from Lafayette, Louisiana, exploded for 21 first-half points en route to his first 30-point performance as a college player. This was his sixth straight double-point performance and seventh of the season.
The Seahawks made sure the game was well in hand early as they jumped out to a 62-19 first-half lead thanks in great part to Thomas’ offensive prowess. The freshman finished the game shooting 12 of 15 from the field and 5 of 8 from the free throw line.
The Hawks, who are now 8-5 for the season, had six players in double figures, including Beaumont sophomore Devin Ellis who finished with a double-double performance with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jamyus Jones, a Memorial graduate, added 16 points, while Tevin Baker and Colin Just each had 11 and Darion Chatman, another Memorial grad, chipped in 10 points with eight rebounds.
LSCPA finished at a 54.2 percent clip from the floor, hit 50 percent from beyond the 3-point line and knocked down 76.2 percent from the free throw line. This is the fourth 100-plus-point win of the year for LSCPA.
The Seahawks return to action Monday at 4 p.m. when they take on Lone Star College-Tomball at the Carl Parker Center. The early game of the day, Victoria College vs. Louisiana Christian School, starts at 2 p.m.
