Lamar has six home games and a visit to Texas A&M on tap as part of its 2019 football schedule, released Tuesday.
Times were not listed, but the Cardinals will host Tennessee-based Bethel University on Aug. 31, Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 7, Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 28, Abilene Christian on Oct. 5, Central Arkansas on Nov. 2 and McNeese State on Nov. 23.
Abilene Christian, which last played Lamar in 2016, returns to the schedule as a Southland Conference opponent. Nicholls State, the reigning Southland champion, is left off. Under current Southland scheduling policies, a different team is left off for a two-year period.
Bethel is an NAIA member located in McKenzie, a 2-hour drive west of Nashville.
Texas A&M will be Lamar’s first road opponent on Sept. 14, with a trip to Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 21. Other road games are: Sam Houston on Oct. 12, Incarnate Word on Oct. 19, Northwestern State on Nov. 9 and Houston Baptist on Nov. 16.
A&M won the only other meeting against Lamar, 73-3, in 2014. The Cards went 8-4 that season, the last winning season before 2018.
The 2019 season will be the third under head coach Mike Schultz for the Cardinals, who went 7-4 last season and made their first-ever NCAA Division I appearance. Lamar last achieved back-to-back winning seasons in 1966-67.
“We are very excited about the 2019 schedule,” he said. “It will be a very challenging schedule that should prepare us for the rigors of Southland Conference play. In addition, this schedule provides six home dates for our fans to come enjoy the day at Provost Umphrey Stadium.
“I know I speak for our coaches and players when I say we’re excited to hit the field for the start of spring camp. We’re all looking forward to preparing for the 2019 season.”
