GOLF: Stroud, Landry miss cut at Riviera

When Chris Stroud and Andrew Landry look back on their experience in the 2019 Genesis Open at rain-drenched Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, the memories won’t be positive.
Landing on the wrong side of the draw, the two Port Neches-Groves exes had to slog through a marathon of late starts, restarts, rain, cold and one of the longest days of their PGA Tour careers. It eventually added up to a missed cut.
Both players, after spending all day at Friday at Riviera to get in 29 and 28 holes, respectively, returned to finish up round two at 7 a.m. Saturday. With the temperature 43 degrees when they began, both played their remaining holes in even par.
That left Stroud with a second round 75 and a 36-hole total of 144. Landry signed for a 72 and 143. The cut was at even par 142.
For Stroud, the missed cut snapped the momentum of back-to-back top 10s.
He’d looked in great shape to keep it going after an opening 69 on Friday morning. But the weather and probable fatigue took its toll in the afternoon round with four bogeys through the first 12 holes.
Stroud managed a lone birdie after returning Saturday morning on the 14th hole, but followed that with a bogey. He was likely headed back to Houston before later-starting players finished their second round, ironically, in perfect conditions.
Landry flirted with the cut line throughout his second round, getting to two under at one point Friday afternoon, then slipping back to one over by the time play was suspended.
He got back to even Saturday morning with a birdie at his 14th hole, but a three-putt bogey at his 16th left him on the outside looking in.
Neither Landry nor Stroud are scheduled to play in the upcoming Puerto Rico Open.
