Lamar State College Port Arthur men’s basketball coach Lance Madison has been named the HoopDirt.com national junior college Coach of the Week for Week 14 of the 2018-19 season.
Madison, in his seventh season as head coach of the Seahawks, was named the JUCO Coach of the Week after two weeks of adversity, followed by two huge NJCAA Region 14 wins.
Madison missed a conference game scheduled Feb. 2 against Coastal Bend College as he flew home to attend his mother’s funeral. The team traveled to the game in his absence but one of the school’s vans was rear-ended in an accident on Interstate 59, ultimately forcing a postponement of the Seahawks’ game against the CBC Cougars.
After Madison returned to the sideline, he and the Seahawks were able to orchestrate back-to-back league victories with an 87-81 win over Lee College and a 78-73 comeback win over Blinn College.
Now at 17-9 overall and standing in sole possession of second place at 7-6 in the Region 14 South Zone, the Seahawks are schedule to travel to Beeville to face Coastal Bend College in that make-up game this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
HoopDirt.com is the largest website in the country dedicated specifically to college basketball coaching news, jobs and rumors at all levels. The national website was founded by college coaches to help the college basketball community stay informed of what is going on in the coaching profession. This is the fourth season for the Coach of the Week recognition.
Madison joins Week 14 Coach of the Week honorees Mike Krzyzewski of Duke in NCAA Division I, Bryan Rooney of Cal State East Bay in NCAA Division II, Shawn Cassidy of Concordia University Wisconsin in NCAA Division III, and Danny Neville of the University of Jamestown (North Dakota) in NAIA.
Madison is now qualified to be named the junior college national coach of the year, selected at the end of the 2018-19 college basketball season.
