Texas freshman quarterback and recent Port Neches-Groves graduate Roschon Johnson was honored as a finalist for the Franklin D. Watkins Award, presented to the top African American male high school scholar athlete, at a gala in the Washington, D.C., area Saturday.
The award is presented by the National Alliance of African American Athletes.
Johnson posted a 4.0 grade-point average at PNG and graduated from the high school in December so that he could begin spring drills with the Longhorns. Johnson is battling for the top backup role to Sam Ehlinger.
The other finalists included Elijah Higgins of Austin, Aeneas DiCosmo of Montclair, New Jersey, Nakobe Dean of Horn Lake, Mississippi, Nicolas Cross of Washington and Jaylen Coleman of Charlotte, North Carolina. It was not immediately known who won the award.
