LUMBERTON — District 22-4A track teams definitely battled the elements in the running finals on a rainy day at the district track and field championships at Lumberton High School on Thursday but it did not slow down the Bridge City Lady Cardinals from “storming” to the district team title.

The Lady Cardinals amassed a stunning 241 points to dominate the seven-team field. The West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs were a distant second with 103 points.

The top four individuals in each event qualified for the Area Meet, which will be at Hargrave High School in Huffman in a couple weeks.

The Lady Cardinals put together an excellent team performance throughout the field events and running finals. They racked up a total of eight first-place finishes, nine second-place finishes and nine third-place finishes to pile up a slew of points.

On the boys side, Silsbee won the team crown with 146 points. LCM was second with 111 points while WOS snagged third with 102 points.

The WOS Lady Mustangs had a nice outing on the track Thursday. Diamond Judge won the 100 meters (12.87) and Kianna Barnes captured the 400 meters (1:03.16). The Lady Mustangs also brought it in the 400-meter relay (50.99) and the 1,600-meter relay (4:16.01) to snag gold in both.

Bridge City’s Kaylen Smith won the 800 meters (2:39.24) while teammate Mikenna Brown took the 1,600 meters (5:59.47).

On the boys side, LCM senior distance standout Eli Peveto nailed down two gold medals as he won the 800 meters in 2:05.11 in a tight race and then he dominated the 1,600 meters by running a 4:42.60. He won the 3,200 meters on Tuesday.

Bridge City’s George Fleming won the 100 meters (11.29) while WOS captured a first in the 400-meter relay (44.08).

Bulldogs earn 2 district tennis titles

Rain on the second day of the District 21-5A tennis meet forced the matches to move from Barbers Hill High School to the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.

That did not stop Brandon Do of Nederland from earning a boys singles championship. Do defeated Jonah Smith of Port Neches-Groves 6-1, 6-0.

Megan Do and Jayci Wong of Nederland won the doubles championship over Sydney Underwood and Emily Tilton of Barbers Hill.

In girls singles, Virginia Thome of PNG finished second to London King of Barbers Hill. Tereul Jimenez and Joshua Tran of Nederland earned second to Kyler Duhon and Mason Daniels of Barbers Hill in boys doubles, Catherine Reinholt and Kiley Weatherly of PNG came in third in girls doubles, and Han Vo and Tommy Hoang of Nederland came in third in mixed doubles.
