Sabine Pass coach Jason Thibodeaux assured Friday night’s final score with Houston’s Lutheran High School North did not indicate how well the Sharks moved the football.

“We moved the ball on them and then shot ourselves in foot with turnovers and penalties,” he said. “That’s promising.”

That was a positive Thibodeaux took from a 57-7 loss, dropping the Sharks to 0-4 on the season. Lutheran North (3-0) won the first meeting, 58-0, on Sept. 6 in Houston.

Harold James took a screen pass and went 80 yards of the Sharks’ first offensive play. After that, the Lions “kind of pressed on Harold” and took the pass away from the Sharks, Thibodeaux said.

Nothing could slow down the Lions’ offense, for its part.

“They got some skill kids outside,” Thibodeaux said. “They can throw the ball real well and they can run after the catch.”

Sabine Pass and KIPP Houston High have moved their game from Oct. 4 to Oct. 11, giving the Sharks in effect their second unscheduled off-week of the season. Their Sept. 19 home game against Orangefield junior varsity was washed out by Tropical Storm Imelda.

Sabine Pass also added an Oct. 18 home game against Legacy Christian.

“I knew it was oing to be an uphill battle,” Thibodeaux said, summarizing the season up to this point. “Sometimes, it takes a while for your whole team to jell. Missing a whole year, it’s more than I thought it would be.”
