Check out latest local filings ahead of May 2 general election

A few more people have thrown their hat into the ring as filings for the May 2 election hit the mid-point.

Here’s a look at the filings so far:

Port Arthur City Council

Six seats are up for grabs on Port Arthur with several new names popping up as of Friday. The information on filings is taken from the city secretary’s office, which is on the city’s website, and only individuals whose applications have been checked through the city secretary’s office are included (unless otherwise noted).

  • District 1 now has three opponents with Mike Mason, who is a retired educator, being the latest one to place his name on the ballot.

He faces Ingrid West Holmes, who is employed with Stategic Healthcare and manager of Gift of Life and Willie “Bae” Lewis Jr., retired.

Lewis previously served on city council.

  • District 2 has one candidate so far, Armando Ruiz, who lists his occupation as consultant.
  • District 3 also has one candidate, Morris Albright III, president of Port Iron. Albright previously served on council. Incumbent Thomas Kinlaw III said Friday he has filed for re-election.
  • District 4 has no candidates at this time.
  • Position 7 has one candidate, the incumbent councilmember Charlotte Marie Moses.
  • Position 8 has drawn three candidates with Rosendo Ochoa Jr., process operator, being the more recent applicant. He joins Tieranny S. DeCuir, a business owner, Raymond Scott Jr., retired, vying for the seat.

Scott reached his term limit in the District 1 seat he previously held and has set his sights on the Position 8 seat.

Those wishing to file for a Port Arthur City Council seat can do so at the city secretary’s office in city hall, 444 Fourth St.

Terms are for three years.

Port Arthur Independent School District

Two seats are up for grabs on the PAISD board of trustees and as of Friday only the two incumbents have filed for reelections. They include Dianne Brown, a retired school district employee, and Kenneth W. Lofton Sr., 47, process operator.

Terms are for three years.

Persons wishing to file for a seat on the school board can do so at the administration office, 4801 Ninth Ave.

Nederland City Council

Two seats are up for grabs on Nederland City Council this election cycle with two familiar names placing their names on the ballot.

Talmadge Austin has filed for re-election to the Ward 1 seat and Emmett Hollier has filed for the Ward III seat.

Hollier ran successfully for the seat last year when the seat was vacated by Don Albanese when Albanese stepped down to run for mayor, a position he won.

Terms are for three years.

Interested persons can pick up a packet to apply at Nederland City Hall, 207 N. 12th St., Nederland.

Nederland Independent School District

The two NISD trustee incumbents, Kay DeCuir and Jerry Albanese, so far are the only two candidates who have filed for spots on the board.

Terms are for three years and are at-large.

Interested persons can pick up a packet to apply at the NISD administration building, 220 17th St., Nederland.

Jefferson County Drainage District 7 Board of Commissioners

The race for three seats on the DD7 board of commissioners is heating up as two of the seats are now contested.

Richard Beaumont, 75, retired, has field for re-election to his Groves seat on the board and has drawn an opponent, Mike Cabaniss, 64, a welder.

Two people have filed for the Port Neches seat. Matt Vincent, 60, who is in real estate, is being challenged by Eric Adams, 60, retired. Incumbent Billy Joe Butler had not filed as of Friday.

The DD7 board includes five commissioners with one representative from each of the Mid-County cities and two from Port Arthur that serve two-year staggered terms. Elections are held in May of even numbered years.

Sabine Pass Port Commissioners

The Sabine Pass Port Commissioners make up a five-person board of which two seats are up for election. They include the seats held by Bob Sexton and Jerry Heid.

An employee in the Port Authority office was unavailable to update the candidate listing on Friday.

Terms are for two years.

Persons wishing to file can do so at the Sabine Pass Port Authority Office, 5960 S. First Ave., Sabine Pass.

Sabine Pass Independent School District

Three incumbents on the Sabine Pass ISD Board of Trustees have filed for reelection so far. They include Lane Plauche, Julie Saunders and Charlene Deslatte.

Those wishing to file for a seat on the SPISD school board can submit applications at the school, 5641 S. Gulfway Drive, or mail applications for a place on the ballot to Sabine Pass School, P.O. Box 1148, Sabine Pass, TX 77655, Attn. Duyen Blanton.

Filing dates

Filing for a spot on the municipal, school board or other ballots ends on Feb. 14.

The general election day is May 2.
