Bulldogs take another from Indians, 49-37

NEDERLAND — Behind Tyler Jackson’s 16 points and Hayden Hefner’s 13, Nederland earned its second win of the season from Port Neches-Groves, posting a 49-37 victory Friday in the Dog Dome.
The win allowed Nederland (22-9, 7-1 in 21-5A) to remain one game behind Memorial in district standings with four remaining. PNG (12-17, 3-5) was trying to remain in third place, going into Friday’s game tied with Barbers Hill.
The offense cooled off for both teams after Nederland took a 17-14 lead through one quarter. Each team nailed four 3-point baskets in the first half, as the Bulldogs held on to a 26-21 advantage.
The outside shots hardly came in the second half. Noah Marchak sank the only 3 of the final 16 minutes as the Indians tried to stay within striking distance, but Nederland hit 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away. Jackson capped the night with a breakaway jam just before the final buzzer.
Brady Nail, Khristian Curtis and Marchak each scored nine points to lead PNG.
Nederland has a home game against Dayton on Tuesday, visit to Dayton on Feb. 7, game at Memorial on Feb. 14 and home finale against Barbers Hill on Feb. 18 remaining. PNG will host Memorial on Tuesday, play at Barbers Hill on Feb. 7, and host Vidor on Feb. 11 and Cleveland on Feb. 18.
