During an eight-game winning streak, Nederland was held to fewer than 50 points on three occasions.

The Bulldogs hoped to win tough again coming off their first UIL playoff victory in six years. But third-ranked Shadow Creek, which was trying to overcome its own playoff frustrations, proved too tough defensively in taking a 46-34 victory Friday in a 5A area round game at Mont Belvieu’s Barbers Hill High School.

Nederland’s best season in recent years ended at 27-10. The Bulldogs shared the District 21-5A title with Memorial, a team that had beaten Shadow Creek in the area round the past two years, for their first championship since 2012.

Shadow Creek (27-3), a Pearland school within the Alvin Independent School District, is only in its fourth year of existence. The Sharks will play either Houston Madison or Texas City in the 5A Region III quarterfinals.

Junior Tyler Jackson led Nederland with 13 points. Senior Cedric Pete added seven and classmate Hayden Hefner had six.

Nederland got into the area round following a 41-40 win over Galveston Ball on Tuesday in Deer Park. Jackson hit the go-ahead free throw, and the Bulldogs earned a defensive stop before the buzzer.
