Two from Port Arthur received recognition from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football 2020 preview magazine.
Memorial senior defensive end Jordon Thomas was placed on third team defense for the Whataburger preseason Super Team, and Former Thomas Jefferson quarterback Todd Dodge, how head coach at Austin Westlake, was named the 6A coach of the year for 2019 by the magazine.
Thomas, who committed to play for the University of Texas in May, missed nearly all of the 2019 football season due to an ankle injury and surgery.
As a sophomore in 2018, Thomas earned five sacks and 32 total tackles.
Dodge lead the Chaparrals to win the 6A Division II state championship against Guyer in 2019, his fifth career state title win and the Chaparrals’ first since 1999. Dodge took over the program at Westlake in 2014.
Dodge was quarterback for the Yellow Jackets under Ronnie Thompson and set the state record for most passing yards in a season as a senior in 1980. Dodge and the Yellow Jackets also played in the 5A state championship game in 1980, losing to Odessa Permian.
