Louisiana powerhouse squeezes past Titans in thriller

The Memorial Titans were on a roll, having won nine straight including the James Gamble Classic championship trophy. They say all good things must come to an end, however, and that was the case in Tuesday night’s matchup with Lake Charles’ Washington Marion High School, which arrived in Port Arthur as No. 3 in the Louisiana power rankings.

But the rankings did not bother Memorial one bit. The game went back-and-forth and neither team got more than a four-point lead. Memorial head coach Terrul Henderson said the game was rarely more than a two point difference.

But WM turned its late two-point lead into four points in the closing seconds to pull off a 61-57 shootout victory.

Four Titans were in double figures, including M. Miles who had 19, Kevin Fontenot had 12, and Tevin Turner and Shaquille White each had 15. The Titans, which had a 31-30 lead at the half, also saw strong performances from JeKore Tyler, who tallied nine points, and Darius Harris pulled down 14 rebounds.

Both teams scored 16 in the third quarter, giving Memorial a 47-46 lead heading into the fourth and final period. That is when WM outscored the Titans 15-10, including the final four points of the contest to claim the victory.

Henderson said he was proud of his team’s effort and that it was just one of those games that was going to come down to the last couple plays.

“We had time for a couple shots at the end but we could not get any good looks and then time ran out,” said Henderson whose team slips to 15-6 on the season and will not be back in action until next Tuesday when they will travel to North Shore to face the Mustangs for the District 21-5A opener.

Lady Dogs 41, Lady Indians 27

PORT NECHES — The first and fourth quarters made the difference on the hardwood at the Reservation in Tuesday night’s rivalry battle between the Nederland Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Port Neches-Groves Indians.

After the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-2 advantage in the first period, the second and third frames were only decided by one point. But then Nederland slammed the door shut but outscoring the Lady Tribe 11-4 in the final eight minutes to take home a 41-27 victory.

Nederland’s Alicia Thevis was the only player for either team in double figures. She had 13 points, three assists and seven boards. Taylor Carlson was also a big contributor for the Lady Dogs. Carlson scored just six points but grabbed nine steals, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists.

The Lady Indians, meanwhile, were led by Shalyn Dickens, Haley Savant and Caitlyn Dykes. Each player had six points.

Both teams will continue District 20-4A competition on Friday. Nederland, which evened its league mark to 2-2 and upped its overall record to 10-11 for the season, will host LC-M for its next game.

PN-G, which is now 0-4 in league play, will travel to Livingston. All district contest are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
