Donation drive to aid historic retirement home

A donation drive has been set up to aid a historic private retirement home.

CrossCountry Mortgage in Beaumont is collecting non-perishable food items and cleaning supplies for the Community Retirement Home.

Annette Daniels, manager supervisor with the retirement home wants to make sure the public knows the need is not dire and no one is starving.

Currently the home has about 20 residents who are, for the most part, independent. The home is private pay and one of a few nonprofit such facilities in the state.

The retirement home usually relies on grants but grants take time to be processed.

Daniels said it is normal for the facility to see a need at the end of the year through January or February then things pick back up.

Community Retirement Home Inc. was founded in 1944 and has served Port Arthur and the surrounding area for 80 years, according to information from the facility.

It was established by the Federal Missionary Society — composed of members from local churches — who saw a critical need for safe, dignified housing for elderly residents living in unsuitable conditions.

In the past there were organized fundraisers such as an annual barbecue fundraiser and Valentine Tea.

People wishing to donate can drop items off at CrossCountry Mortgage, 2914 East Freeway, No. 101 in Beaumont. Cash donations are also accepted.

Community Retirement Home is located at 3141 Procter St.
