Teen hit by car while trying to board school bus

A 16-year-old male was struck by a car while attempting to board a school bus Tuesday morning.

Port Arthur Police responded to the incident at 6:28 a.m. Aug. 25 at the intersection of Dallas Avenue and Gulfway Drive, according to a press release from the police department.

Officers determined that a school bus was stopped or slowing to a stop in the outside lane of Gulfway Drive near the intersection of Dallas Avenue and had activate the flashing red lights and stop sign mounted on the side of the bus. Traffic in both directions are required to stop.

The teen attempted to cross the roadway in front of the bus so that he could board the bus from behind in the inside traffic lane.

The driver of a car disregarded the red flashing lights and bus mounted stop sign and attempted to pass the bus. The vehicle struck the teen in the roadway in front of the bus.

The victim was transported to Christus Hospital-St. Elizabeth in Beaumont via ambulance. He suffered several broken bones and possible internal injuries.

The vehicle driver was not charged on scene but faces possible felony charges after the investigation is complete.

Police urge all motorists to pay attention to school zones and school buses. Children in most school districts started school this week. School buses make frequent stops and it is a violation to pass a school bus with flashing red lights illuminated.
