Tugboat Island rebuild project seeks volunteers
The Tugboat Island rebuild project is set to begin next month with volunteers needed to aid construction nearly 30 years after the first time the community came together to build the playground.
The project is still looking for volunteers to be a part of construction. Volunteers will have access to child care if needed and will be fed three times a day. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up through the project website at Tugboatisland.com where they can pick a date and a time slot to volunteer before the day of the build.
Build dates have been set and will take place over two weekends, week beginning Feb.19 – 23 and week two being Feb. 26 through March 2.
“We invite you and your organization to be part of an inspiring project aimed at revitalizing Tugboat Island,” said Eric Sullivan, General and Fundraising Coordinator. “This park will serve not only the children of Port Neches but all children across Southeast Texas. Your support as a volunteer has the potential to change young lives, providing them with opportunities to play outdoors and create cherished memories.”
Tugboat Island Rebuild is a 501 c3 nonprofit organization formed by resident Rita Morgan in 2020 with the goal of bringing the playground back to life. In 2024 the organization raised more than $1 million to rebuild it.
“We thought we were going to be able to repair the existing park but it was in really bad shape,” said Rita Morgan General Coordinator for the project.
The original playground was demolished in 202 due to deteriorating structures that were deemed unsafe. Morgan then helped raise money to build a new playground.
The Park is set to be rebuilt using 95% post-consumer recycled plastic according to the project’s website.
Locals are also able to purchase a personalized picket fence post for the Playground that will have the person’s name or desired message on it. Post can be purchased at any Neches Federal Credit Union Branch in Port Neches for $100.
“I can’t wait to see our community enjoy a safe, fun environment for families and children that promotes outdoor activities and gatherings,” said Glenn Johnson, Port Neches Mayor.
