Lamar State College-Port Arthur’s Kieran Woods signs Division I basketball scholarship
PORT ARTHUR – Kieran Woods became the third of three Lamar State College-Port Arthur basketball sophomores to sign a Division I scholarship, inking his letter of intent to North Carolina Central University on Tuesday.
Woods joins fellow sophomores Evan Sims and Ty Allen as every sophomore playing for Lamar State-Port Arthur this past season advanced to the NCAA Division I ranks. Sims signed to play for the University of Louisiana at Monroe while Allen will play for Tennessee Tech University next season.
Woods, a graduate of Crane High School in Chicago, joined LSC-Port Arthur this past season, starting in 21 games for the Seahawks. He averaged 15.6 points a game as a guard for the Hawks, hitting 49 percent from the field and 67 percent from the free throw line. His top game of the 2012-13 season came on a road trip to Paris Junior College where he scored 36 points with four rebounds and two assists. The 36-point performance is the second-best in school history.
The sophomore earned third team NJCAA All-Region XIV accolades and second team All-Region South Zone honors.
North Carolina Central University is located in the heart of college basketball country in Durham, N.C. The Eagles finished the 2012-13 season with a 22-9 overall record and 15-1 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The No. 2-seeded Eagles lost in the quarterfinals to eventual MEAC Tournament champion North Caroling A&T.
