Charles Andrew Martin, Sr. answered the Lord’s triumphant call on January 1, 2016. He was born to the late Lorena (Constantine) and Clarence Martin in Port Arthur, Texas on August 23, 1928. He came to know the Lord at an early age and was a faithful church attendee at the Thomas Blvd. Church of Christ until the challenges of his health prevented him from doing so. He was a man of sincere character and served his nation as a member of the United States Army.
He retired as a Merchant Marine after approximately forty years of service. His travels took him all over the world and allowed him to be a true global citizen. Although, he loved seeing different cultures of the world, he loved his Port Arthur home. He was an avid outdoorsman known as “Big Daddy the Mountain Man. He enjoyed all forms of outdoor sports especially hunting and fishing. His skills allowed him to garner many trophies including ducks, fish, deer, bobcats, and other animals. He proudly displayed these trophies in his home and they surrounded, and comforted, him at the nursing home residence.
His love of family was ever evident in the enjoyment he had in family activities and gatherings. He enjoyed taking his children and grandchildren hunting, fishing, and playing. He loved being present at family gatherings, dinners, and special events such as graduations, weddings, and christenings.
He was preceded on his heavenly journey by his beloved wife of fifty-six years Shirley Mae (Joseph) Martin, son, Charles Martin, Jr.; brothers Clarence Martin Jr, Matthew Martin, and Sidney Martin, sisters, Emma Ruth Harris and Dorothy “Fanny” Rogers.
Looking forward to a heavenly reunion with him are: his children Mark W. Martin (Sandra), Cynthia K. Byerly (Rodrick), Mary Martin Bill (Gerald), and Glenn D. Martin; sister-in-laws, Betty Babineaux and Evelyn Williams, one brother-in-law David Joseph, (11) grandchildren, (15) great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Thomas Blvd. Church of Christ, 2948 Thomas Blvd., Port Arthur, TX with a viewing from 9 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Live Oak Cemetery under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
