Abel’s double-double carries Indians
VIDOR — The Port Neches-Groves Indians snapped their three-game losing streak with a 56-49 win over the Vidor Pirates on Friday.
PN-G grabbed an early lead and held on in the end to improve to 12-10 overall and 4-3 in District 22-5A play.
Ryan Abel finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Adam Morse and Edsel Damo each added 12 points. Ram Polavarapu finished with nine points.
The Indians were up 15-12 after the first quarter and took a 22-14 lead into halftime.
Vidor (8-13, 0-7) stormed back after the break by outscoring PN-G 17-10 in the third. The Indians were up 32-31 going into the fourth quarter and outscored the Pirates 24-16 in the game’s final eight minutes.
Maverick Quirante led the Pirates with 28 points.
PN-G plays host to Baytown Lee Tuesday to start the second round of district play.
SABINE PASS 71, HULL-DAISETTA 49
DAISETTA — Three days after Daniel Sam scored 33 points, another Sabine Pass sophomore nearly matched that.
Jamyus Jones had 31 points, Sam knocked down 16, and the Sharks (10-6, 4-2 in 24-2A) picked up their second straight victory on the road Friday. They’ve now won four of their last five.
Sabine Pass is off until a home contest against 2A top-ranked Big Sandy on Friday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
VIDOR 57, PN-G 42
PORT NECHES — The Lady Indians had two double-digit scorers and a double-digit rebounder, but the Lady Pirates had a little more firepower and came away with a 15-point win.
For PN-G, Khloe Droddy had 13 points and three rebounds, Hannah Jones finished with 12 points and six rebounds and Taylor Johnson pulled down 12 boards to go with six points.
