Social media, branding and communication is the topic of the latest session provided by the Port Arthur Alumni Group Saturday at the city’s West Side Community Center.
PAAG’s purpose is to invest in and encourage Port Arthur youth, and what better way than to tackle a subject that most young people are familiar with, but perhaps don’t know how to harness in a way that could positively impact their futures.
Saturday’s event, called “The Connect!” begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Westside Development Center, 601-A Ransom Howard, Port Arthur.
“We will talk about social media and ways they can use it to their advantage, how to use that tool to brand yourself and how to present yourself to the world,” Leah Jacobs, PAAG member, said.
Free breakfast will be provided and door prizes will be given away.
PAAG ‘s membership includes former and current Port Arthur residents who have gone on to become successful.
For about the past four years, the group has given back to the city’s youth by planning events to discuss what is important to their lives.
It’s a setting where the youth can feel open to ask questions in a comfortable setting where they won’t be judged.
“The point is to provide them with good information. Some things you cannot learn unless you experience them,” Jacobs said. “We want to tell them things we wish others had told us.”
Saturday’s topic explores relationships and how people communicate within those relationships.
“Because of social media and texting, the art of communication is becoming somewhat lost, or people don’t think it is needed so much more. We want to express that it is still relevant,” Jacobs said. “Where I work, relationships are everything — actual face-to-face real time.”
Guest speakers are Kaala Jacobs and Carlieia Roberts.
The event is free.
