PRUETT COLUMN: Astros to win AL West

Yes, baseball season has been going for a week, but the beauty of making a few predictions about the MLB year seven days late is that the league plays 162 games.
It is never too late to go public with where I think the Houston Astros will finish and what Carlos Correa will do in his sophomore season.
The first prediction is this: the Astros will lose two of three to the New York Yankees because of some horrible pitching performances from Colin McHugh and Mike Fiers.
See, I am 1 for 1 to start the season. Man, this feels good.
Houston started the season 1-2 last year and lost the opening series to the Cleveland Indians, so do not quit yet, Astros fans.
The 2016 season is filled with a lot of expectations for the Astros, who are coming off an 86-76 year and a trip to the postseason. Houston defeated New York in the AL Wild Card game in the Bronx and then pushed eventual World Series champion Kansas City to five games.
Fans expected a quick start this year and, it has yet to show up. The high point last season came on May 3 when the Astros defeated Seattle 7-6 for the club’s 10th straight win to go to 18-7 on the year.
Houston is in for a dogfight all year long with the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels in the AL West.
Texas had Houston’s number all last year, it seemed, and the divisional games will be important again this year. The Rangers won the division last year before being knocked out of the playoffs by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Astros will win the division this year. Mark it down.
There are too many bats in the Astros line up for this not to happen. The roster is stacked and Houston is also waiting on slugger Evan Gattis to return from the DL.
Correa is a monster in the No. 3 hole and after winning the AL Rookie of the Year last year will most likely be in the MVP race this year.
The 21-year-old shortstop is going to pick up a lot of RBI this year and will see a lot of pitches to hit because of the two guys in front of him, Jose Altuve and George Springer.
Springer is the key for the Astros in my book. The guy has all the tools to be a star in this league. The difference this year is Springer needs to stay healthy and get on base before Correa comes to bat.
Correa has guys hitting behind him that should force pitchers to not work around the young star.
Colby Rasmus, Carlos Gomez, Gattis and rookie Tyler White are threats with the bat each time they come to the plate.
The Astros pitching should come around behind ace Dallas Keuchel and McHugh. The team will get back Lance McCullers, who started this year off hurt.
So will the Astros make and win the World Series like Sports Illustrated so bravely picked? I don’t see it happening this year at least. The team is still a year away from me making that pick.
My money is on the San Francisco Giants defeating the Royals, just like two years ago. The Giants are due since it is an even number year. San Fran has won championships in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
If the Astros make a fool of me, then I will be more than happy.
