Mrs. Sylvia B. Sylvia of Port Arthur, Texas died Saturday June 18, 2016 at her residence. She was a native of Beaumont, Texas where she spent her childhood and early adulthood. She showed true devotion to her family through her love and concern for their welfare. After moving to Port Arthur, she was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a window clerk and promoted to the position of finance supervisor. Her postal career spanned 43 years.
Sylvia was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in El Vista. She was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary (KPCLA) 164 and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. She was an integral member of the comfort committee, assisted in confirmation training for the youth and was a representative of the church’s volunteer group at Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas. Her ability to organize productive fundraisers for the church made her a true asset.
She also served as director on the board of Port Arthur Community Federal Credit Union.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, A.B. Bernard, Sr. and Blanche St. Julian, and her sister, Evelyn Bernard. She is survived by her spouse of 44 years, Harold E. Sylvia; daughter, Jackie Wickliffe of Houston; granddaughter, Lisa Wickliffe of Port Arthur; sister, Shirleyann of Beaumont; brothers A.B. Bernard of Beaumont, Glenn Gamble of Houston and Martin Bernard of South Carolina.
A Christian mass will be held Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with visitation from 8 a.m. until service time under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
