NEDERLAND — Mid-County coach Jimmy Collins asked Brock Fenn to give him a few innings against Del Rio.
Fenn did that and then some. He pitched a complete game for Mid-County, which defeated Del Rio 8-6 after a 3-2 victory earlier Saturday against Eagle Pass in East Texas Senior Babe Ruth state pool play.
Fenn, a Nederland graduate, allowed five hits and struck out nine batters.
“I haven’t went a complete game since my sophomore year,” Fenn said. “It felt good. My arm felt great today to go the distance.”
Fenn said the confidence for Mid-County against Del Rio started the game before against Eagle Pass.
“Today was really good, especially beating Eagle Pass,” Fenn added. “That was a big game for us and against Del Rio was a big one because now we are in the championship.”
Mid-County faces Eagle Pass for the state championship at noon today.
Eagle Pass, which defeated Mid-County 4-1 Friday, and Mid-County were tied 2-2 heading to the top of the seventh.
Zack Clark led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice by Noah Taylor. Kody Kolb, two batters later, drove in Clark to give Mid-County the lead going to the bottom of the seventh.
Eagle Pass loaded the bases and with two outs sent starting pitcher Ricardo Gonzales to the plate. Gonzales sent a shot to right that looked like a base hit that would potentially win the game, but Kolb came up with his second outstanding play of the inning.
He dove for the ball and gloved the third out.
“I’ve been struggling at the plate,” Kolb said. “I’ve been hitting a lot of fly balls to the opposite side. They had been playing a shift on me because they knew I was going the opposite way. With it being so close and two outs, I was doing anything to get him in from second.
“The play in the bottom of the seventh did look like a hit off the bat. In that situation you have to do anything you can to make the play and end the game. That’s what I did.”
Nederland’s Brendon Dunkleberger and Hamshire-Fannett’s Skilor Fulk both scored in the top of the fifth to give Mid-County a 2-0 lead over Eagle Pass.
Eagle Pass answered right back with two runs of its own to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
Fulk did a great job on the mound against Eagle Pass. He gave up two runs on four hits and struck out two batters.
Fulk only faced three batters in each of the first three innings.
“Skilor pitched a wonderful game the first game,” Collins said. “He had all his stuff going. We asked Brock to give us two or three innings and then I look up and it’s the fifth and sixth innings. He did a great job.”
Del Rio jumped on Mid-County for two runs in the top of the first and Mid-County answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
Nederland graduate Colby Price homered to deep left in the bottom of the first.
Mid-County scored twice in the third and three more times in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.
Fenn and Jacob Martin both scored twice against Del Rio.
“The first game we played real well and I think it took a lot out of us,” Collins said. “Second game, we struggled for a while and then our bats came around. In the end, we just relaxed.”
