For graduates new and old, a festive time will be had on Pleasure Island this weekend in honor of all Port Arthur alumni.
“It gives the chance to exhibit unity throughout, and to show the younger generation how to come together,” Shawn Johnson, organizer of the third annual event, said.
The Port Arthur Alumni Picnic 2016 runs from noon to 7 p.m. on July 16 at Lakefront Park on Pleasure Island.
It is open to the public and intended for alumni from all Port Arthur high schools—Stephen F. Austin, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Memorial—as well as for alumni of all ages.
The picnic will be a family day with events scheduled for children and adults. Activities will include: carnival-type rides for kids, barbeque cook-off, and live musical entertainment provided by Lil Jabb and the Zydeco Soldierz (with their show starting at 2 p.m.).
Security will be handled by officers on the scene. If previous years’ attendance rates are anything to go by, attendance should reach the thousands.
To help accommodate those large numbers, public transportation will be provided to picnic attendees who do not want to make the full trip themselves:
Two buses will start pick up at 10 a.m. at the County Building parking lot in downtown Port Arthur. Both buses will be operating on a 15-20 minute pick up schedule.
In addition, to accommodate those traveling from other areas, a designated area will be provided for those with RVs who wish to sleep over. To do so, registration must be completed through the inbox of the PA Picnic’s Facebook before 3 p.m. on Friday.
