MEMORIAL REPORT: No pressure: Titans embrace change to 22-5A

If the Port Arthur Memorial Titans are feeling any pressure dropping from Class 6A to Class 5A, they aren’t showing it.
The Titans are now the biggest school in District 22-5A after being the sixth largest the last two seasons in District 21-6A.
Coach Kenny Harrison said the team is not worried about anything else other than getting better each day.
“There is no pressure at all,” Harrison said.
Incoming senior and LSU commit Kary Vincent Jr. echoed the words of his coach.
“We are attacking it like there is no pressure,” Vincent said. “We are wanting to dominate this division.”
Memorial is coming off back-to-back 3-7 campaigns in Class 6A. The Titans had reached the playoffs for six straight seasons before 2014.
“Me, myself, as a corner, you have to possess a short-memory loss,” Vincent added. “I really don’t let that affect me. I don’t really think about the past two seasons and neither do my teammates. We are going to come out and worry about what is ahead of us. We want to have a state championship run.”
So maybe returning quarterback and coach’s son Kadon Harrison feels some pressure?
“There is no pressure,” Harrison said. “It is the same competition we had in 6A. We just have to worry about each game.”
The games start Saturday, Aug. 27, against Bay High of Panama City, Fla., at the Thomas Center in Beaumont. Memorial plays its first 22-5A game Sept. 16 at home against Central. The Titans beat the Jaguars 24-7 in 2015.
Both Harrisons and Vincent are really excited about the move to 22-5A. Each thinks the change in venues will help out the community of Port Arthur attend more games.
The Titans over the next two years have road games to Livingston and Baytown being the farthest away. Memorial is coming off seasons with trips to Channelview, Baytown, Houston, La Porte and Deer Park.
“Last couple of years we had some unfortunate things happen, but no excuses,” Kenny Harrison said. “Just to have the opportunity to be on a level playing field and not having to travel so much on Thursday and Friday nights can really energize the program from a coaching standpoint as well as the kids.
“The kids are also energized knowing they will be playing in a lot bigger crowds. That will even happen on away games.”
Vincent said he is more than ready to go up against teams with players he has grown up around.
“I am super excited about that,” Vincent said. “It is not only great for us players but for our community to not have to travel so far to come to a game. It is great for us.”
