NEDERLAND — It was an up-and-down night for the Nederland Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs did get the four-set win against the Deweyville Pirates on Tuesday at the Dog Dome. It just didn’t happen in the fashion coach Kristin Lemoine would have liked to see from her team.
The Bulldogs stormed out to a commanding 2-0 lead after back-to-back 25-14 sets in the first and second frames. Deweyville then battled through the third set to win 26-24 in the third.
The Pirates then took a 20-14 lead in the fourth and seemed on their way to forcing a fifth set. Nederland fought back and eventually won, 25-22.
“We need to learn to go earn points and not wait until they are given to us,” Lemoine said. “We have to learn to control our unforced errors.”
Amanda Longlet led the Bulldogs with four aces while Abbey Montalvo and Blake MacFarlane each had three.
Longlet added six blocks.
Montalvo led the match with 37 assists and also had 17 digs. Darcie Jones finished with 19 digs and Katelynn Huckabay added 13.
Huckabay led Nederland with 10 kills, Peyton Parker had eight and Montalvo and MacFarlane each had seven kills.
One of the biggest differences of the night was the serve of Montalvo. She finished the match off with three straight service points.
“That is why she is always on the court,” Lemoine said. “She can really do it all.”
Longlet had a nice run of serves in the second set. She came to serve with Nederland up 19-14. She never left the service line and the Bulldogs won 25-14.
Nederland went up 24-23 in the third, but Deweyville struck for three straight points to win 26-24.
“That is why we play these types of teams,” Lemoine said. “Deweyville has a great team and this will prepare us for district.”
