A rivalry so delicious, you can just taste it

High school football fans can have their cake and eat it, too, regardless of whose side they are on.

The Mid-County HEB in Port Arthur, which straddles the borders of Nederland and Port Neches, is holding their first cake-themed event for Mid-County Madness at noon on Friday.

“We decided this year to make a big statement and to do something for the community,” Michael Lee, unit director for the store, said.

“We spent three months in planning and then we put the cake together Tuesday and Wednesday.”

A scoreboard will be set for each Nederland and Port Neches-Groves, and a “cake battle” will take place at the cake cutting on Friday.

“The Nederland vs. PNG scoreboard will show which fan base raised the most money to give to either school,” Lee said.

Cake slices will be $2 each, and the end zone pieces for each side will be sold off in donation form.

“Proceeds will go to both schools’ graduation projects — Nederland’s Project Celebration and PNG’s Project Graduation,” Lee said.

As for taking sides in this year’s competition, Lee was impartial — to a point.

Lee, whose children attend PNG, said, “As a businessman, I’m loyal to both sides; but, I will definitely cheer for PNG.”

The cake, which sported life-size replicas of each school’s helmet done in cake and icing, was not a small feat.

“It took two days to make. It was 10 full sheets and I had to sculpt the cakes,” Terri Daub, bakery manager, said.

According to Daub, 50 pounds of icing was used.

“A lot of sugar went into that cake,” Daub said.

Daub is an Austin native and was not entirely prepared for the scope of the long-standing rivalry when she first came to the area.

“I never realized how big this event is,” Daub said.

Still, she said she enjoyed it.

“We kind of wanted to go big with Mid-County and make a statement with this,” Daub said.

“It was fun. I’ve done sculptures before, and it was a challenge; but, I found out I was up to it.”
