Six players scored in double figures as Lamar State College Port Arthur rolled past Victoria College 99-65 on Wednesday night at the Carl Parker Center.
The Seahawks, now 2-0, were led by Florida sophomore Keion Farrington’s 15 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots while Akol Deng, a freshman forward from Australia, picked up his first collegiate double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Cam Frank and Petar Radojicic each scored 13 for the Seahawks while Madit Daniel had 12 and John Comeaux 10 points for LSCPA.
“Keion is athletic, he’s quick off the floor and he plays with a lot of energy,” Seahawks Coach Lance Madison said. “Keion has some experience and we need to show some leadership. We need him to play like this every night.”
The Seahawks moved the ball around far better than they did in their season-opener just a few days ago, picking up 29 assists in the game with just 14 turnovers. Farrington, who played at Mott Community College this past season, also led the defensive effort with five of the team’s nine blocked shots.
“We’ve been working hard on getting on the boards, being more aggressive in the paint,” Farrington said. “Things felt really good in warmups today and when we got into the game, things just came together.”
The Pirates opened the game knocking down three-pointers to stay close through the first half, taking the lead a couple of times midway through the first 20 minutes of play. The Pirates finished the first half hitting nearly 60 percent of its shots from beyond the arc.
The Hawks kept the pressure on with a few treys of their own and some strong play inside by Farrington and Radojicic. LSCPA finished with 44 of their points in the paint and shot nearly 53 percent from the field in the game.
At the 6:55 mark of the first half, Chol Luk took the dish from Farrington and hit a 3-pointer to give the Seahawks the lead for good at 30-27. Victoria College would get no closer than six points the rest of the way, falling behind by as many as 36 late in the second half.
“Tonight, we were focused and settled in and we played a much better game,” Madison said. “We have good chemistry already. Everybody on the roster can step out there and score for us and that’s a great place to be. We’re starting to mature as a team and you can already see that in the success we’re having on the court.”
The Seahawks return to action this Saturday when they welcome Lone Star College-Tomball to the Parker Center with tipoff at 4 p.m.
