Prep Roundup: Smith helps Nederland can 11 treys in home win

NEDERLAND — Cade Smith nailed five of Nederland’s 11 three-point baskets, and the Bulldogs had very little trouble with Lumberton on Tuesday in taking a 67-44 victory in District 22-5A play.

Smith finished with 17 points, while Darrell Jones led the Bulldogs (18-5, 1-1 in 22-5A) with 23 points. Freshman Hayden Hefner added 11 points.

Nederland led 22-4 through one quarter and was ahead 39-18 at halftime.

Gavin Whitmire had the game high of 25 points to lead Lumberton (0-2 in 22-5A).

Nederland has a big district game at Ozen on Friday.

SABINE PASS 70, ORANGEFIELD 69

ORANGEFIELD — Jamyus Jones sank five three-point baskets and finished with 38 points Tuesday as the Sharks (5-12) managed to close out a close game on the road after many narrow defeats this season.

Jones made 10 of 14 from two-point range and hit 5 of 11 from behind the arc.

Daniel Sam had 25 points for the Sharks. He made 11 of 19 field-goal attempts.

Sabine Pass was ahead 25-14 through one quarter and 39-34 at the break.

OZEN 75, PNG 57

BEAUMONT — Port Neches-Groves did not allow Ozen to have an easy game.

Ozen, however, did outscore the Indians 30-9 in a second quarter that seemed to make the difference in an 18-point win.

PNG (5-11, 1-1 in 22-5A) had balanced scoring with Hunter Curtis’ 14 points, Edsel Damo’s 13 and Derrick Papa’s 11, but the Indians could not withstand a 26-point output by Tyler Broussard.

GIRLS

LUMBERTON 70, NEDERLAND 22

LUMBERTON — Cayleah Martin finished with eight points and Da’Reyale Jones netted seven, but the Bulldogs (5-14, 0-4 in 22-5A) had a hard time containing the Raiders in district play.
