Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux of Port Arthur has received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, it was announced Monday.

Babineaux received a certificate, medals and a signed letter from President Obama for his accomplishments.

According to a news release, Babineaux made history by donating to more than 95 charities in Atlanta and Port Arthur. The count represents his jersey number, a number in charities that no other NFL star or celebrity has benefited.

Among his charitable endeavors, Babineaux has served as a teacher’s assistant during a horse therapy program for students with disabilities, played Santa Claus at a homeless shelter for teens, donated a computer lab at a group home, delivered Christmas gifts to refugees from Cambodia, Laos, and has been a spokesperson for Lupus Foundation of Georgia.

His Babineaux’s Unit includes organizations he rewards as a “thank you” for their hard work, and selfless service. Kids and others served by the chosen charities get to have fun at an NFL game.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award honors professional, retired, youth and collegiate athletes and sports organizations for their volunteerism and community service.

Babineaux, a Lincoln High graduate, and the Falcons will face the Seattle Seahawks at 3:35 p.m. Saturday on Fox (KBTV-4). Falcons kicker Matt Bryant is from Bridge City.
