Tough Tuesday: Nederland drops home battle; PNG falls on road

NEDERLAND — Little Cypress-Mauriceville rebounded from a first-set defeat to Nederland and dominated the second and third sets before hanging on in a fourth-set thriller to pick up a non-district victory Tuesday on the volleyball court.

Set scores were 21-25, 25-16, 25-15, 28-26. The defeat dropped Nederland to 8-6 on the season.

No statistics were available, but Kameron Cuniff led Nederland in hits and Hannah Hickey led in blocking.

Nederland will face Tarkington at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Tarkington.

 

TARKINGTON 3, PNG 1

TARKINGTON — A close first-set defeat seemed to set the tone for Port Neches-Groves (12-5) on the road Tuesday night.

Tarkington built on the 25-22 win to take a 25-14 decision in set 2 before PNG ground out a 25-18 win. The Longhorns, however, finished off the Rock-A-Noos 25-19.

Bayja Newby stayed active defensively for PNG with 23 digs. Libbie LeJeune led PNG with nine service points, Baylee Priddy added seven and Cece Garcia had six.

Kaitlyn Gil totaled 23 kills and 15 digs, Stalee Adams blocked two, Rachel Hammersmith made 21 assists and Priddy had 19.

PNG hosts Goose Creek Memorial at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
