CORPUS CHRISTI — Senior Benny Schweizer wrapped up a strong weekend of competition for the Lamar Cardinals by winning the Islander Open main draw individual title Sunday afternoon at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Complex in Corpus Christi. Schweizer finished the weekend with a 5-0 record to bring home the title.

Schweizer wasn’t the only Cardinal who played Sunday. Junior Lukas Grubelnig squared off against freshman Carlos Paton Canal in the consolation final. The Cardinal newcomer picked up the victory in the back draw match.

“Benny played a flawless championship match,” said LU head coach Scott Shankles. “He was aggressive from the beginning and never took his foot off the pedal.

“Carlos played a great match to win the back draw. Overall, this was a great start to the season. Our focus now turns to the practice courts where we can improve,” added Shankles.

Schweizer came ready to play against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s William Mottet in front of his own fans. Schweizer was effective in quickly taking the home court advantage away from Mottet. The Manheim, Germany, native took a quick lead and never looked back. After posting a 6-2 win in the first set, Schweizer replicated that score in the second set to bring home the title.

The Cardinals combined for a 20-11 (.645) singles record at the Islander Open, a record that might have been better except for the fact that LU had several players meet up in the early rounds of the tournament. Big Red managed a 4-4 (.500) mark in doubles competition.

The Cardinals will have two weeks to prepare before they return to action. Selected players will be invited to play in the ITA All-America Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The ITA tournament will take place Saturday, Sept. 30, through Monday, Oct. 9.
