BOB WEST ON GOLF: Stroud, Landry look to rebound in Mexico

Published 6:55 pm Tuesday, November 7, 2017

Both Chris Stroud and Andrew Landry will be trying to get their games untracked in Mexico this week, after recent struggles in the fall portion of the PGA Tour’s 2017-18 season.

The former Port Neches-Groves stars are teeing it up in the OHL Classic which is played near Cancun. Stroud owns the distinction of being the only player on the PGA Tour to have played in all 10 previous variations of the event.

He’s done well there, too, with top five finishes from 2011 through 2013 and eight of 10 made cuts. The high water mark was outright third in 2013, after shooting rounds of 66-68-66-68 for a 72 hole total of 16-under 268.

That’s a far cry from how things how gone for Stroud in three fall tourneys this year. He missed the cut in Napa, California, then finished 75th and tied for 47th in limited-field events in Malaysia and South Korea, respectively.

His stroke average for 10 rounds is a lofty 74.15. Some of that can
probably be attributed to a wearying finish to the regular tour, when he played 10 consecutive tournaments. Also a likely contributing factor is the time he spent helping organize a charity pro-am to raise funds for Hurricane Harvey victims.

Stroud, though, rested up and having worked on his game last week in Sea Island, Georgia, left for Cancun battling an upper-respiratory infection. He was on his third day of antibiotics when he departed Houston on Tuesday.

Landry, meanwhile, came out smoking after regaining his PGA Tour card, launching his season with a T7 last month in Napa. He stayed on a roll for one round the following week in Mississippi, playing the first five holes in six-under-par before settling with a 66 that left him tied for first.

Since then, however, it has been a constant struggle. From the round one tie for first, he went on to finish T59, then missed the cut last week in Las Vegas. Instead of banking some serious money, and big FedEx points at a time when the PGA fields are not as strong, Landry is barely treading water.

Though he is No. 51 in Fed Ex points on the strength of the T7 in
California, Landry’s scoring average has jumped to a totally uncharacteristic 71.7.

Last week in Vegas, he was three-under through the opening eight holes, but wound up having to settle for an even-par 72. He backed that up with a 78 that sent him packing.

On the positive side for this week, Landry has played some of his best golf outside the United States. The two tournaments he won on the Web.com Tour were played in Colombia and The Bahamas.
