WACO — Jadyn Pimentel scored 12 points in her collegiate debut, but the Lamar Cardinals fell to the third-ranked Baylor Lady Bears, 121-62 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday evening.

“Obviously we played a very good team in Baylor. There’s a reason why they’re ranked third in the nation,” LU coach Robin Harmony said. “Our kids were a little shell-shocked. There’s some things we obviously could have done better, but those are things we know we can improve.”

The Cardinals (0-1) had a 10-7 lead early in the first quarter before Baylor (1-0) went on a 24-0 run to take control of the game.

“We hung with them for five minutes and then the wheels came off,” Harmony said. “The part that is disappointing is that we hang our hat on defense, and we didn’t play our style. We opened our gate right away, and they pretty much scored on us at will.”

The Cardinals were 20-of-75 (26.7 percent) from the field, including 9-of-33 (27.3 percent) from 3-point range. LU connected on just 52 percent (13-of-25) of its attempts from the foul line.

Chastadie Barrs had 14 points and six assists for LU. Barrs, who led the nation in steals last season, had one steal on Friday. She now has at least one steal in all 62 games in her career.

Kalani Brown, Baylor’s 6-foot-7 All-American center led the Lady Bears with 26 points and 21 rebounds. The Bears shot 62.9 percent (44-of-70) from the field.
