Former Nederland coach Hurt, 84, dies

Ben Hurt, a popular football coach for the Nederland Bulldogs in the 1960s and ’80s, died Sunday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Hurt, 84, was an assistant when Gene Henderson directed a resurgent Bulldog program in the mid-1960s, and returned for a short tenure as head coach (1982-83) before joining the University of Houston Cougar staff.

Hurt was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State and captain of the Blue Raiders in 1956.  He also was an offensive coordinator at Texas A&M and head coach at his alma mater before retiring while at UH in 1996.

Hurt is survived by Joan, his wife of 59 years, sons Ross and Greg Hurt, and two grandsons.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro.
