TYLER – Nederland product Jase Miguez scored 14 to lead Lamar State College Port Arthur against Tyler Junior College on Wednesday night but it wasn’t enough as the Apaches walked away with an 83-63 NJCAA Region 14 win at Wagstaff Stadium.

Miguez, who scored all of his points in the second half, finished with four three-pointers and three rebounds as the Seahawks struggled to find an answer to Tyler’s offensive prowess. The Apaches, who remained undefeated for the season at 10-0 and now 1-0 in league play, ran out to an 11-3 lead over the first four minutes of the first half. The Seahawks, who are now 4-5 overall, came up with a 9-0 run to take a 12-11 advantage at the 12-minute mark. Back and forth the two teams battled with the game eventually knotted at 19 apiece with 6 minutes left to the break. A basket by Matej Gaspert put the Seahawks up 21-19 but then LSCPA’s offense went AWOL as Tyler rolled out a 19-2 run for a 38-23 lead at the buzzer.

Tyler would extend that lead to 45-23 before Miguez would knock down his first trey of the second half to stop the Seahawks’ scoring drought.

“I’ve been waiting on Jase. I know he’s a good shooter,” said LSCPA head coach Lance Madison. “His statistics aren’t real good right now but if I’m a betting man, I know he’s going to knock down some shots. Tonight he finally got in a rhythm and hit some shots for us and it was good to see him do that.”

In spite of Miguez’ long-ball dominance, Tyler, who was led by sophomore Brian Warren’s 23 points, would never allow the Seahawks to get close again as the Apaches held a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

Freshman Alex Williams scored 12 points for the Hawks, hitting four of his own three-pointers, adding a team-best five assists in the effort. Redshirt freshman Ethan White added 10 points and Rodney Brown, a West Brook High School grad, led the Seahawks on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds with four blocked shots.

“I knew coming in here it would be a real challenge for us,” Madison said. “In the first half we had some shots that just went in and out. If we had scored more earlier and kept the pressure on, this would have been a much different game.”

The Seahawks return to conference play this Saturday at the Carl Parker Center in Port Arthur when they face Trinity Valley Community College. That game tips off at 4 p.m.
