Joyce Kennerson tied for the sixth-leading scorer in Texas Southern women’s basketball history Wednesday.

Kennerson, a junior from Port Arthur, scored 33 points in the Tigers’ 91-54 win over Alcorn State in Houston. She made 10 of 19 shots from the floor, made 11 of 14 free throws, dished nine assists, had three steals and grabbed four rebounds.

Kennerson was two points shy of her career high, but she reached 33 for the fourth time this season. She broke 30 for the first time since hanging 33 on Paul Quinn College on Dec. 17.

Kennerson tied Monica Okolo, who played from 2003-06, on the Tigers’ all-time scoring chart and has 1,206 career points. Through Tuesday, Kennerson (25.5 points per game) was second only to Kelsey Mitchell (25.8) of Ohio State in NCAA Division I scoring average.

Mitchell, a senior, is already Ohio State’s all-time leading scorer. She had 22 in a win over Indiana on Sunday and will face Minnesota at home on Thursday.

Texas Southern will host Alcorn State at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the H&PE Center in Houston.
