Police Chief Rod Carroll said in an issued statement that police were called to Wexford Drive near Highway 105 at 3:19 a.m. Sunday.

There, authorities said a pick-up truck had struck a tree in a one-vehicle accident. There was major damage to the truck’s passenger side.

An officer attempted to revive a child, 14, who had been thrown clear of the vehicle, until paramedics arrived. Justice of the Peace Rodney Price pronounced the child, whose identify was being withheld until family is notified, dead at the scene.

The other two occupants, both 13, were taken to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital by Acadian Ambulance Service in serious but not life-threatening condition, Carroll said.

Carroll said the investigation was continuing. Speed appeared to be a factor in this wreck.
