A Jefferson County grand jury indicted three suspects in the May 9 beating death of Michael Odell Legg, 40, the first murder in five years in Nederland.

But as indictments go, this was somewhat of a cryptic one.

The 252nd District Court offered only that Duane Lamont Owens Jr., 23, Ashlie Cherie Martinez, 24, and Dcobien James Dorsey, 19, were indicted for the crimes of murder, aggravated robbery, burglary of a habitation and criminal conspiracy.

“This case was investigated by the Nederland Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and received assistance from other local law enforcement agencies. The lead detective is A. Dupuis with Nederland PD,” the Jefferson County district attorney’s office said in a prepared statement issued Friday afternoon.

Martinez and Owens also were both indicted for a case of assault family violence-felony charge, which occurred in Beaumont in March. Beaumont police investigated, the district attorney’s office said.

The DA’s office said they would provide no additional information “due to the sensitive nature of the case moving forward in the court process.”

The case initiated in the early morning hours of May 9, when a neighbor of Legg’s received a remote warning via a security camera that something was amiss at her Beauxart Garden Road home. Nederland police went to the neighbor’s home, found nothing suspicious, but saw both the front and back doors of Legg’s home next door open.

They investigated and found Legg dead on his living room floor. Police believe the suspects took both Legg’s cellphone and firearm from the home. The cellphone powered down at 2610 Euclid in Beaumont, where Martinez and Owens lived. The two were captured by police May 23, arrested and charged with Legg’s murder May 24.

Arrest affidavits for Martinez and Owens said they offered “full confessions”  to the assault on Legg that led to his death. They admitted taking his phone and firearm. Both affidavits said “other suspect/suspects took other items from Legg’s residence.”

No bond was set for the murder charge for Martinez and Owens. Bond of $125,000 each was set for the charges of assault family violence. The three remained in the custody of Jefferson County Corrections on Friday.

Dorsey, of Beaumont, was charged in a warrant May 31, and taken into custody a week later. His bond was set at $1 million, jail records say.
