If the Babe Ruth World Series championship continues to reside in the Southwest Region, the Alabama Rawdogs of Mobile can take the credit.
Alabama beat Mid County twice in as many days to take back the Southwest Region title in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Rawdogs won Monday’s championship 20-3, in five innings after sending the Nederland-based team to the losers’ bracket final with a 4-0 win Sunday.
Mid County then played its way to the final with an 8-1 win over Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Sunday night.
On Monday, Mid County was held to six hits against Alabama’s 16 and made two errors — two fewer than the Rawdogs. Alabama, batting the top half of each inning, scored four runs each in the first three innings, three in the fourth and five in the fifth.
Mid County had gotten to Alabama’s starting pitcher through the first two-thirds of the bottom of the first although it didn’t collect a hit. Against the reliever, the defending world champions had scored two earned runs on six hits.
Marcus Foreman went 2 for 2 and Garrett Neale collected the other Mid County hit.
Mid County’s Noah Gregory gave up seven earned runs on six hits and walked one in the first inning. Brandon Petix met a similar fate through three innings, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits. Each pitcher allowed two Alabama homers.
Brandon Cluck struck out two, but Alabama plated three earned and drew four walks against him on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Neale walked one, but did not allow a hit in the final one-third.
Each team had two hits in Sunday’s meeting, with Landon Hiltz and Neale each lining one. Gregory struck out three and allowed one walk in four innings after starter Austin Schaper was tagged with four runs (all earned) on two hits in two frames.
Cluck earned the win over Pine Bluff. In three innings, he held the Arkansas team scoreless, struck out one and was charged with two hits and three walks.
Cooper Coe worked the next three innings in relief. He fanned one, walked two and allowed a run on two hits. Neale close the win out with two strikeouts and a walk.
Mid County outhit Pine Bluff 11-4. Cluck drove in two runs and had a double, while Justin Smith and Caleb DuBois (double) each had two hits. Riyad Antoine, Case Babino, Cluck, Hiltz, Petix, Foreman and Coe also lined a hit apiece.
