Businesses in Jefferson County can now apply for grants through the county’s tourism committee. With the addition of the 2 percent Jefferson County Hotel Occupancy Tax that was implemented in 2001, the count is able to offer these

“The grants are for anyone whose business resulted in drawing people to hotels in Jefferson County and is advertising to attract people to the area to use hotel rooms,” Kathi Hughes, director of the Ben J. Rogers Regional Visitors Center, said. “The requirements state that applicants have to spend it on marketing within a 15-mile radius.”

Despite the ravages of Tropical Storm Harvey on this county, Hughes said hotel occupancy has held steady.

“Jefferson County has held pretty steady,” she said. “Of course, we had people staying in those rooms after the storm who were displaced. But after someone stays in the hotel for 30 days, they are eligible to not pay the taxes on their stay.

“Then, you have to add the fact that many of the hotels had their bottom floor flooded out.”

Hughes said that conventions and workers coming back to the area helped pick the average daily rate (of occupancy) back up.

“Now, we have more workers coming back and conventions have started,” she said. “Plus, we have conventions scheduled.”

While many cities have experienced no increase or even a slight dip, Port Arthur’s ADR has increased since last year, Hughes said.

Both businesses and individuals can apply for grants, which cycle through twice a year. The total for the year is $250,000 in grants available, Hughes said.

People can apply by calling 409-842-0500, or by visiting www.co.jefferson.tx.us for more information. Once on the site, go to the “Economic Development” tab and look for “Hotel Occupancy Tax Funds Application.”

Hughes said those applying by email and fax should call ahead of time to make sure she knows to be on the watch for the application.

The deadline to apply for the grants is 5 p.m. Sept. 7.
